Intro to Art - Syllabus

Intro to Art

It is an art class focusing on the composition, techniques and ideals of the masters. The student is introduced to the masters’ work via power point presentations and interactive DVDs. Class discussion and critiques of student work occur frequently and students learn how to create an opinion about art. Students also create art using a variety of mediums through different project types that explore composition. Students in this class select project mostly from the drawing and painting lists.
Month Mediums explored
September Charcoal and Pencil
• Introduce Use and Care of Charcoal Tools and Paper.
• Concepts and Vocabulary to Learn: Patterning, Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal or Oblique in Application to the use of Line; Assumed Line, Fine Line, Fuzzy Line, Organic Line, Geometric Line, use of Negative and Positive Space, in Contour Drawings.
• Subject Matter Used: Still Life – My Choice. A variety of them will be placed around the room.
October Form, Shape, Line, and Contour Drawing
• Concepts to be Learned: Student will learn to address the Basic Formula for drawing the Human Skeleton, Human Figure, and the Human Face. They will use Pencils as a medium.
• Beginning of Project will involve use of Charcoal/Pencil as Medium, gradually shift to use of Art Sticks and Pencils.
• Review use and care of Art Tools, Introduce use and care of Art Sticks and Pencils
• Subject Matter includes fellow students, Reflection (Mirrors), for self portraits, standing 16”wooden models for accurate anatomical drawings, wooden life size hands (L. and R.), for hand studies.
November Form and Shape – Charcoal / Pencil
• Concepts to be Learned; The art of Shading, Spatial Relationships between Forms and Shapes, a Beginners understanding of Perspective
• Reinforce positive and negative shapes and how they relate to each other
• Vocabulary; Highlight, Mid-tones, Shade, Deep Shade, Reflected Light, Hatching, Cross Hatching, Vanishing Point, and Review of last weeks Terms
• Subject Matter used: Various Still Life Set-Ups,
• Introduce facial proportions.
January Introduce the Elements of Art (line, form, texture, value, color)
Focus on the Science of Color
• The Origin of Color: The student will learn to identify and use primary, secondary, and complimentary colors and understand the color wheel
• The student will understand the use of Watercolor as a medium
• Loosening up Exercises, Use of Hand as a Tool, Use and Care of Watercolor, Brushes, and Watercolor Paper.
• Introduce Set Up and Clean Up Responsibilities.
• Beginning Application – Finger Paint Color Wheel, Introduce Brush technique in the context of designing a spectrum of color
• Vocabulary: Primary, Secondary, and Complimentary Colors, Geometric, Organic, Non-organic, Nonobjective, Use of Horizon Lines, Elements of Design; (Patterning, Harmony, Balance, Perspective, function.).
• Project Application– Landscape Painting at the River, Still life with fruit in classroom.
• Introduce Rulers, Protractors, Compasses, may want to use in still life, (tools like these will be used extensively in Architectural Design and Watercolor Unit in Advanced Art.)

Watercolor Techniques in Painting
• Introduce the color wheel. Proper use of Watercolor Paper, Use and care of Watercolor Brushes and Rulers and pencils reinforced.

• Concept to Learn: How to Use Photographs as Subject Matter and Graphing, Horizon lines, Perspective, Layout on Picture Playground

March Papermaking and Printmaking
• Concepts to be learned: The Student will learn the process of paper making and designing their own commercial Christmas Cards through the Process of Printmaking
• The student will begin to learn how to analyze and judge relationships among the Elements and Principles of Design.
• Vocabulary: Process of Production, Blender, Mould and Deckle, Paper Vat, Metallic Dust Sparkles, Dry Pulp, Illustration, Linoleum Block, “Foamy” (a thin poly cutting material), Acrylic and Tempera Paint, Brayers and Calligraphy Pens.
• The Students will learn to use Printmaking Tools, Scissors, and Calligraphy Pens and will produce multiple and varied copies. As a result, they will understand the importance of an emphasis or dominant focal point in a work of art.
• Various 20th Century and Contemporary Artists will be viewed in regard to card design and illustration.
• The student will learn printmaking technique through the use of Acrylic and Tempera Paint.
• Review clean up procedures.
April Matting / framing
• The Student will learn the art of matting.
• Introduce the Matt Cutter: safety precautions, design, function, use
• Introduce different types of matt paper, thicknesses, nap, color, function
• The student will learn how to match the proper matte to the proper picture so that they compliment each other
• Vocabulary: picture plane, Matt frame, Inside frame, True space, Beveled edge, Outside edge, Inside Vertical and Horizontal measurements, Overlap, Matt Width (vertical), and Length (horizontal)
May Architectural Design
This section will be spent on developing a beginner's understanding of architectural design. Students will be introduced to single point perspective, multiple point perspective, vanishing points, horizontal lines, oblique lines, vertical lines, and diagonal lines, parallels, perspective, creating an illusion of depth, paradigms of perception that will give them a new and more enjoyable understanding of geometric design. We will also become acquainted with some architectural eras, architectural designs and designers of the 20th century.
