Vocabulary

Line

Measure - refer to a lines wieght, length and width
Contour Lines -refer to the edges of things
Actual Line-refers the points within being connected
Implied line - Is a line that is missing some of actual line, and the visable line is made up by the viewer

The functions of Line
to outline shape
to create depth and texture through modeling, stippling, hatching, cross hatching, and gesture
to suggest direct and movement - horizontal lines sugest stability and vertical defy gravity

Shape, Volume and Mass

Shapes
defined as areas within a compopsition that have boundaries that separates them from what surrounds them; shapes make these areas distinct - form speaks to the shapes with sculpture
Types of shape
geometric shape are made of regular and precise lines
organic shapes are made of soft and natural lines
biomorhic shapes create the feeling of ebb and flow
amorphous shapes contain various irregular areas of texture and density contained within pools of painted materials
Positive shapes refers to the actual shape of and object with a work whereas the negative space refers to the space not taken up by an object
Mass
defined as the bulk contained within an object
Implied mass refers to illusion of mass created with in a space. example; light shows and wireframe obgects have implied mass
Actual mass refers to items that takew up space and a measurble volume and weight

Light and Value

Value refers to the lightness of a specific surface
Value contrast refers to the shades or tints of a specific surface
Tint refers to the amount of white within a specific surface
Shade refers to the amount of black within a specific surface

Color Hue refers to wavelength of light that is reflected from surface
Cool light is reflected from colors from lime-green to purle-rose red and on the blue green side of the color wheel
Warm colors are devided from Lime-green to purple-rose on the red-orange side of the color wheel
Saturation of color is the pureness of the color - pure hues have the greatest intensity or brightness
Texture Actual Texture is tactile, you can feel it when you touch the canvas
Visual Texture is simulated on the canvas by the artist to create the feeling of texture
Subversive Texture is create to help the viewer see more and think again about the message the artist is trying convey
Space Overlapping objects develop space within a work, the object "in front" is "on top" of the object behind.
Composition models help and provide you with methods for creating space and overlapping in interesting ways
Time and Motion Actual Motion refers to live works of art the do move - mobiles and water art
Implied Motion and time infers that a motion has occurred or is about to occur
