Description:

 

Advanced Placement English is offered for those who seek advanced standing in college English. The students will develop their ability to think, interpret, and write. Students must be able to read difficult, sophisticated literature with competence and to write extended analyses with speed and maturity. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the skills necessary for analyzing and criticizing literature and for writing expository essays that meet college-level standards. In addition, the course will prepare students for the AP Examination in English by a close study of poetry, prose, and drama; a review of pertinent terminology for literary analysis; frequent in-class critical compositions; and numerous practice AP examinations.

Objectives:

3. To refine one’s ability to interpret a work of literature and to write a multi-paragraph analysis with speed and sophistication.

4. To become conversant with the terminology of English literature and to employ the terminology appropriately.

5. To understand the different characteristics of the literary genres (drama, poetry, novels, short stories, and essays).
