Policies
Expectations:
Be an active learner. Give evidence every day of preparation for class, engagement with the material, and intellectual curiosity. This attitude will be reflected in your grades. Participate in class and avoid all distractions. Set and revise your goals regularly. Know what you want from this class, evaluate whether or not you are attaining your goals, and revise your strategy when necessary. Organize and discipline your work habits. Homework assignments are given daily, with a heavy emphasis on critical reading, writing, and studying. Take notes in class and review them frequently. Take charge of your own progress. If you are absent, take the initiative and obtain the missed work. If your grades fall below a C average, get extra help. Check this web site for class handouts, assignments, and other useful information and materials. Be part of a learning community. Listen respectfully and attentively to one another's ideas and questions, and respond to each other's observations with consideration and insight. Meet all deadlines. Written work must be submitted on time and in proper form. If the work is late, you will lose one letter grade per day until it is turned in. Unless otherwise specified, written work must be typed, double spaced. All untyped work must be written in ink and turned in on loose-leaf paper. Dishonesty of any sort is unacceptable. Be aware of all behavior which constitutes cheating and/or plagiarism and avoid it at all cost. Penalties for academic dishonesty are severe. (See additional handouts on plagiarism.) Keep a separate notebook for your English class and bring it to class daily. Also, there are a number of books for this class. The planbook will advise you as to which texts are needed. Failure to bring your books, notebooks, and other necessary materials will count as a missing homework assignment.
