Description:
This course provides instruction in the basics of vocabulary, grammar, composition and literature. It includes the study of themes and types of literature in order to develop the student’s ability to interpret and appreciate good writing. The student is expected to master a basic list of literary terminology and to employ the terms appropriately. He will also become conversant with the various genres (short story, novel, drama, poetry, essay) and their differing characteristics. Composition will focus on the command of the paragraph structure, and move into the multi-paragraph format. Grammar will be studied as an integral part of the composition process.

1. To think, write, and speak effectively. 2. To read with greater competency and enjoyment. 3. To read and write critically. 4. To become conversant with the terminology of literary analysis and to employ the terminology appropriately. 5. To understand the different qualities of the literary genres (drama, poetry, novels, short stories, and essays). 6. To incorporate good grammar and a varied vocabulary into one’s writing and speech. |
