Course Description: The course is designed to expose the student to sound coaching practices, including team and game management, practice organization, and the teaching of sport skills. Coaching responsibilities related to discipline, sportsmanship, and the overall development of the student athlete will be addressed. Each student will be guided as they begin to cultivate their personal coaching style and philosophy.
Course Objectives:
1. To assist the student in gaining an understanding of the responsibilities associated with the coaching profession.
2. To provide some formal instruction and practical experience involved in coaching.
3. That the student will be able to teach a particular sport skill to their classmates. And provide a self-evaluation.
4. The student will be able to identify and relate the qualities of a good head coach, as well as those of an assistant coach.
5. That through observation and personal interview of a coach, the student will gain additional insight into the profession.
6. To gain an understanding of the role of athletics and the mission of the catholic school.
7. To provide a foundation upon which the student can begin to form their personal philosophy of coaching.
8. To assist the student in realizing the importance of risk management as it relates to the coaching profession.
9. That the student gain an understanding of the role that creativity and adaptation have in a coach’s daily practice planning.
Course Requirements: Respect for others always.
Assignment Procedures: The student is responsible for all material covered in class that may have been missed due to sickness, school trips, early team dismissals, etc. The procedures for test and assignment make-ups are addressed in the Salesianum Student Handbook.
Student Evaluation:
Examinations – 2 to 3 tests per quarter
Homework – 3 to 5 per quarter. * Heavy emphasis is placed on homework
assignments. Each completed homework (prompt, typed, completed
as
directed) will add one point to final average. Homework assignments not
meeting the standards stated above will result in a point being deducted
from the student’s final average. Types of homework assignments may include:
discussion questions at
the end of each unit, reading assignments/written reaction from Wooden,
articles, current events. As well as drill cards and peer evaluations (skill
teaching). Test types may include
essay questions, skill teaching, coaching interviews / observations, practice
plans, and player’s notebook.
Quarter Grade –
Tests = 100%
Homework = Additional points are added to, or subtracted
from the student’s test average at the conclusion
of
each quarter
Final Exam: Counts 1/5 of grade – Coaching Practicum: Coaches will submit a typed practice plan and conduct their own practice session.

Grading Scale: 93%-100% = A
92%-89% = B+
88%-85% = B
84%-81% = C+
80%-77% = C
76%-73% = D+
70%-72% = D
below 70% = F
