Physical Education Syllabus

Required Textbooks: None

Course Description: The course is designed to allow all students to actively participate regardless of skill level. This fitness based course exposes students to a variety of team sports and recreational games. Students will receive basic sport skill instruction and rules for each activity. Students are encouraged to apply knowledge gained through health education in all activities.

Course Objectives:

1.      To help meet the physical and recreational needs of freshman students.

2.      To encourage physical activity while promoting its heath benefits.

3.      To assist each student in developing knowledge, understanding, and attitudes which will result in desirable lifestyles necessary to maintain physical, mental, social, and spiritual health.

Course Requirements: Respect for others always.

Student Evaluation and Procedures:

1.      Promptness: The student is expected to be in the locker room area on time. He will be allowed 8-9 minutes to dress.

2.      Preparedness: All students are expected to be properly dressed.

a.       Salesianum school physical education shirt (blue/gold)

b.      Gym shorts/athletic shorts

c.       Athletic shoes (no spikes or boots) and athletic socks

d.      Towel (showers are strongly recommended)

e.       Lock (must be removed after class)

f.        Hats, caps, headbands, etc. may be worn only on spirit days etc.

3.      Responsibility: The student is expected to know his schedule (PE/ Health days).

All medical excuses must be recorded by the school nurse prior to the start of the school day. The student must then present the nurse’s written excuse to the instructor prior to the start of class. Only medical excuses are accepted.

4.      Daily Effort/ Participation: Students are expected to do the best they can in all activities.

5.      Attitude/ Respect for Others/ Unselfishness: Student/ Teacher enthusiasm and thoughtfulness help provide an environment for learning and fun.

Grading Scale: Pass/ Fail/ Medical – Students are evaluated on the criterion mentioned above. Two instances of failure to meet these standards will result in a failing grade for that quarter. Students will be given two opportunities to make–up class time after school if they desire. And thus earn a passing grade. Students should consult their student handbook for information on this policy.

Indoor Group Games (One Play Touch Football, Guard The Pin, Combo Ball, Kick Ball, Team Hand Ball, Mat Ball, Two Ball Soccer, Wiffle Ball)

Lacrosse (modified)

Leisure Activities (Bocce, Horsehoes)

Outdoor Group Games (Capture The Flag, Ultimate Frisbee, Ultimate Baseball, Speedball)

Resistence Training (Introduction and Safety)

Rugby (No Contact)

Soccer

Tennis

Volleyball (Indoor / Outdoor)

Wrestling (Introduction and Basic Skills)
