FRESHMAN YEAR

ANXIETY

Freshman year can be fun but you will also experience anxiety if things are not going as you had planned.  Not getting the grades you want, not making the friends you expected to make, or not making the cuts for an athletic team can be tough.  And there are numerous other events in high school that can create such anxiety.

THIS IS NORMAL

Understand that many freshmen, if not ALL freshmen will feel this type of anxiety at one point or another.  What you do with this anxiety or tension is the key.  Talking it out with someone is probably the most effective way to deal with it.  Find someone you trust (a parent, a good friend, a counselor, etc..) who will talk with you about what you are experiencing.

How will you handle your feelings???

The decisions you make dictate your future plans.  Making decisions when you are filled with anxiety or tension can negatively influence your decision-making skills.  It's important for anyone to:

  1. Stop and take a break when anxious or tense

  2. Think about the situation at hand

  3. Create a list of possible solutions to the situation

  4. Decide which solution is the most CONSTRUCTIVE, that is, which solution will have the most positive effects on you.

  5. Put that decision into action.

ACT.  DON'T REACT!  Reacting can bring about more problems than you need.
