NOW IT'S TIME TO WORK!!
"Failing to prepare is Preparing to Fail"
Gentlemen,
IF YOU DO THE SAME AMOUNT OF WORK DURING YOUR FRESHMAN YEAR AS YOU DID IN 8TH GRADE, YOUR GRADES WILL BE LOWER THAN YOU ARE USED TO!!!
You will need to work during your freshmen year to achieve the As and Bs you earned last year! Sallies, just as any other high school, will be harder than your 8th grade year. You will be expected to do more work outside of class.
Most students who do not achieve good grades do so because they are not preparing outside of class. They do not do homework, do not read assignments, do not study, and probably are not very organized. These are extremely important to doing well. If you do not know how to do any of these things, please talk to your parents or your guidance counselor immediately. The longer you wait to get help, the bigger the hole you will dig for yourself.
ORGANIZE YOURSELF:
Keep all things in their proper place
Have a folder for each class (and keep all papers in their respective folders)
Have a separate notebook for each class
Keep your planbook neat. Write down your class schedule and homework in your planbook Record all grades in your planbook as well.
Be aware of what's going on. Look to the week ahead to see what's coming up.
Ignorance is no excuse. "I didn't know" is not acceptable.
PLANNING/SCHEDULING
Use your planbook (as mentioned above) daily.
Write down and stick to a daily/weekly schedule. Post it where you will see it
Don't rely on the often-used method of "Oh, I'll remember that". WRITE IT DOWN!
Planning your time will leave you with more free time.
Plan your entire day - including eating time, free time, study time, etc....
HOMEWORK:
Do your homework! Don't do some of it. Don't do most of it. DO ALL OF IT!
Homework includes the following:
Reading Writing Studying Reviewing Class Work
Previewing for the next day Organizing materials
Planning the next day's schedule Taking Notes/Recopying Notes
Again, Ignorance is no excuse. You "didn't know" equates to you "didn't do it". A zero homework grade averaged with a 100 test grade is a 50 or an "F".
If you are absent, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out what you missed and to make it up as soon as possible. Don't expect your teachers to keep after you to make up missed work.
Realize when you are struggling and be humble enough to accept help. Having someone help you with your homework is better than failing a test by yourself.
Don't think that you can get by without doing homework because "Mom and Dad won't know." It only takes one phone call to change that!
