COLLEGE PLANNING

*Reminder to all parents:  You are encouraged to set up a meeting with your Guidance Counselor to discuss post-secondary options for your son.

    The following is a list to help parents advise their sons during the junior year:

  1. Encourage your son to sustain, or in some cases improve, his academic effort.

  2. Encourage your son to be involved in diverse activities either in or out of school.

  3. Make certain your son takes the PSAT in October.

  4. Talk about possible career options (match up skills and interests).

  5. Talk about college options (location, size, cost, majors, etc..).

  6. Have your son take the SAT (or ACT) sometime in the Spring.

  7. Make college visits during the Spring and Summer.

 

          Junior Advisory Program

    All Juniors meet with their J. A. P. class directed by a guidance counselor once per cycle to learn about and discuss:

  1. Personality profiles and how they may help in choosing a career.

  2. What colleges are looking for in prospective students.

  3. Criteria students can use for selecting colleges.

  4. How to create a resume.

  5. Important times during junior and senior year in college planning.

  6. College visits and interviews.

  7. SAT and ACT tests.

  8. How to excel in writing college essays.

  9. Narrowing choices and making decisions about which school to attend.

  10. Applications, Financial Aid, and Scholarships

  11. How to use the Naviance program in detail.

  For those looking to complete a career/interest survey:

                *  This is the Campbell Interest and Skills Survey.  It costs approximately $17.95 online and takes 25 minutes to complete.  A thorough report is provided after your son is finished.  If your son is undecided on his possible future plans, it may be worthwhile to complete this survey.
