Salesianum School  Transportation    General Information    2007-08

1. Delaware Residents
  A. School Bus:  Salesianum contracts busses in the Hockessin, Newark, Glasgow, Delaware City, Odessa, and other areas of New Castle County in a cooperative effort to keep prices down.  The prices of the busses in 07-08 are as follows: both NJ routes $1540, Hockessin #2-12 route $1300, There will be no Hockessin #12 route this year due to an insufficient number of riders.  (In order to run two Hockessin route this year the fares for those busses would have to be $3600 per rider just to break even.) The Lehanes company has timed a route which combines the two area covered by the two routes but also eliminates some of the stops  Newark #6 $1350, Bear Elkton #9 $1450, and Dover Odessa $1500. This reflects your cost once the subsidy from the state of Delaware has been deducted, (it is approximately $200).  In addition to these payments, Salesianum subsidizes the cost of the bus contracts.  The schedules change somewhat  from year to year to meet the needs of students from Salesianum, Ursuline, Padua, St. Anthony's and St. Edmonds.  The earlier you submit your needs for transportation, the better your opportunity to get a seat on the bus.  If you sign up for a bus, then change your mind, you must let Mr. Kegelman know by Sept. 15th in order to be eligible for the reimbursement from the state of Delaware, and as stated on the contract the last date to get a refund on the fare is August 30th.

  B. DART Bus: Delaware residents are entitled to receive the reimbursement toward the cost of DART tickets. this is a far better deal than using your reimbursement as cash to ride the DART busses. DART schedules are available in the main office.   Assuming you live one zone away from  school, the reimbursement you receive pays for a little less than 70% of your total cost for round trip transportation.  If you opt for this form of the reimbursement, there are 3 choices:
i) The safest, 20 $12 tickets $240 value, but not so bad if you lose a ticket
ii) Medium 6 $52 tickets $312 value a larger loss if one goes through the wash
iii) Best deal but be careful, 3 $108 tickets and a $21 ticket, $339 value, enough said.
Mr. Kegelman will contact you over the summer to get your order. He will purchase them from DART and distribute them at the beginning of the school year.

  C. Parent Subsidy: Parents who provide the student’s transportation to and from school, (ie drive him, provide a car or carpool), and live at least 2 miles from the school are entitled to a subsidy from the state.  (A list of all the Salesianum students in your zip code area along with addresses, phone numbers, parent names and year of graduation can be obtained from Mr. Kegelman for families interested in forming carpools)  The law allows only one reimbursement per family attending a single school.  (You get another reimbursement if one of your children attends a different non-public school in Delaware.)  The General Assembly determines the amount of the subsidy - it has been as low as $196  and as high as $216.  (This year it is expected to be about  $200.)

2. Pennsylvania  Residents
Some school districts in southeastern PA provide transportation to schools in northern DE.  Pennsylvania law requires that the district transport students to private schools within 10 miles of them. When the district cancels school or is not in session for whatever reason, they do not provide transportation that day.  For Salesianum the districts are Chester-Upland 447-3821, Chichester 458-6881, Garnet Valley 459-7751, Kennett 444-6619*, Penn-Delco 485-8650, Unionville-Chadds Ford 347-1970, and West Chester 436-7120. Salesianum provides each district with a list of our students.  The districts then contact the parents of the applicant.  Bus routes and schedules are assembled once the district has received the names of the students, so schedules vary from year to year, and are not available from Salesianum.

*The Kennett district will not open until Tuesday, Sept 4th and will also be closed on Tuesday Nov. 7th when Salesianum is in session.

3. New Jersey  Residents
Salesianum contracts 2 busses from Lehanes Bus Service (328-7100).  The cost is $1560 in 2006-07.  The state of New Jersey provides no financial subsidy or transportation to its residents.

4. Maryland Residents
The Newark #6 bus has a stop near the border close to Rt. 273, north of Elkton and the Elkton-Bear #9 bus starts at the Big Elk Mall.  Most students make connections with the #9, #6, or Dover-Odessa busses.
For further information call  Matt Kegelman’s voice mail at 302-655-7553

5. Carpool Information

In order to assist families in the process of forming carpools, and to let parents of potential  students for 2008-2009 know where Salesianum students come from, the following chart gives the zip codes of all the current Salesianum students.  Beside each zip code is the number of Salesianum students from that zip code area.  Current Salesianum families can get the names addresses, and phone numbers of the Salesianum families in their area by requesting the information from Mr. Kegelman by email.  The information for the 2008-09 school year is usually available for new students by late June or early July.

                                RULES FOR RIDERS

In addition to the standards of conduct delineated in the SALESIANUM STUDENT
HANDBOOK, the following rules are in effect. Failure to follow the rules
explicitly may be cause for disciplinary action, and could cause suspension
or revocation of the privilege of riding the bus.

1. Do not get on the bus until the driver is present, and never sit in the
driver's seat.

2. Obey the driver promptly. The driver has the same authority as the
teacher in a classroom. He/she is in full charge of the bus and riders.

3. Show the driver your school  I.D.  whenever asked.

4. Remain seated at all times; get on or off the bus only when it is fully
stopped.

5. Do not at any time extend your head, hands or arms out of the window,
whether the bus is in motion or standing still.

6. Do not yell, use profanity, or perform boisterous actions.

Please do not hesitate to report any complaints or suggestions to Mr.
Kegelman at Salesianum School. An unreported problem can go uncorrected.

In addition to notification on the Salesianum website, school cancellations
will be announced over the following  radio stations: AM WDEL (1150), and
AM  WILM (1450).  In the event that school opening is delayed one or two
hours, the bus will attempt to run accordingly.

€ The busses  are contracted by Salesianum through Lehanes Bus Service.

€ The busses will drop off and pick up Salesianum students in front of
Salesianum School at the main entrance on Broom St.

Lehanes buses will not run until Thursday, August 30th

can not leave early because riders from other schools do not have early
 dismissals.

The schedules listed below are for the current year.  They change slightly from year to year in order to meet the needs of our students.

Attention all riders from Archmere, Padua, Ursuline, St. Edmonds and St. Anthony's:

All business, (billing, requests, etc.), regarding Salesianum contracted buses is to be conducted through the transportation representative at your school.

Riders of #2 and #12 Hockessin: The new bus has arrived!

Salesianum, Ursuline, and Padua have agreed to share the cost of subsidizing a new contract with Lehanes.  A new bus was purchced by Lehanes and is available to run on Monday the 24th.   We will now run the former #2 and #12 routes we had last year.  Since overcrowding is now longer a problem, you are free to pick the bus and stop of your choice.  Once you pick a stop please stick with it.  Please see the schedules for both busses below.

At the beginning of the year while bus drivers and riders are getting
accustomed to the daily routine, there can be some confusion which can lead to missed rides.  Should this occur,  I apologize in advance and ask for your patience  as you call and calmly report the problem to me.  If your bus is late need urgent information regarding a Lehanes contracted bus, call 328-7100 with your cell phone to get the status of your bus. The dispatcher can contact any of the drivers at any point in their route.  For long term problems my home office voice mail is 302-655-7553.  If the problem is extremely urgent and you need to talk to me at school during the day, you can call the school, 655-2495 and my extension is 133.   I assure you as the year goes on things will work out.  They always have.
