Tests
- Assignments in this category count 50% of the quarter
grade
- All major unit tests AND all compositions (unless otherwise specified) count
in this category
- All assignments in this category must be completed in order to pass the
quarter
- No tests will be dropped or excused
Quizzes
- Items in this category count 30% of the
quarter grade
- ALL quizzes are combined in this category, but there are
different types of quizzes:
- READING quizzes are frequent, so students may drop ONE
quiz at the end of the quarter IF THE STUDENT HAS TAKEN ALL THE
QUIZZES. It is usually impractical or impossible to make up these quizzes
after an absence so if you miss one for an absence, that is the one you
drop.
- Vocabulary and other types of quizzes must be made up, and none of them
will be dropped.
Homework
- This category is worth 10% of the quarter grade.
- All student begin the quarter with a 100 in this category.
The only way to lose points is to fail to complete an assignment accurately
or on time. Points are deducted in the following fashion:
- -10 for any missed homework
- -5 for a late homework that is still valid or one that
is half completed
- -2 for an incomplete homework or one that is poorly done
- +2 for an especially well done assignment
- +10 for an extra credit homework that the teacher has
allowed or requested - not one the student did inadvertently or just as
his own idea of extra credit
- -10 for a failure on a reading quiz NB: freshmen will lose points if
the reading quiz is below 60. Juniors will lose these points for any failure
on a reading quiz.
Participation
- This category is worth 10% of the quarter grade.
- The teacher will assign this grade at the end of the quarter based upon
the following criteria:
- participation in class discussions - frequency and quality
of responses
- participation in group work
- focus on and engagement in class work
