"THREE-PEAT"
2005-2006-2007
DELAWARE STATE 2006 State Champions
CHAMPIONS

2007 State Champions
Welcome:
Welcome to the 2008 Salesianum Golf season. Hopefully, you are already prepared for the 2008 golf season. Tryouts can begin on Monday March 3rd; weather permitting and golf course availability, so please be ready to begin on that day. You must have your physical form in to tryout, no exceptions. Make sure you have your clubs, appropriate attire, and transportation on your tryout days because the schools van space is limited.
Who:
All serious competitive golf players can tryout for the team. The golf program is VARSITY TEAM only, there are no JV or Freshman teams/programs in the DIAA and it is highly recommended that only those who are qualified tryout because there is limited golf course availability and daylight. A qualified player typically plays golf 8-9 months out of the year, plays in golf tournaments against other junior golfers, understands difference between match play and stroke play and can shoot under 43 for 9 holes and under 86 for 18 holes. The Salesianum Golf Program is one of the best in Delaware and our players are of the highest level with starters averaging under 80 and reserves averaging under 85.
Tryouts:
For those players who have decided that they are qualified; tryouts will consist of two phases:
Phase 1: all new golf team candidates will play 9 holes and must shoot 45 or under to continue on into the next phases
Phase 2: new golfers who make the cut and the returning varsity players from last year will then play 2-3 nine-hole rounds (or more if weather, course availability and daylight permits) to determine the team members, a weighted golf average will be used to help me decide on the team members. The varsity golf team will consist of 10 – 12 golfers and the starting team will be picked by me based on a weighted average and experience.
Where:
Tryouts normally take place at Rock Manor Golf Course, but the Rock is under reconstruction until late in the 2008 season. Last year we had tryouts at Cavaliers Country Club, Fieldstone Golf Club and Three Little Bakers and this year we hope to use all of those courses again. It is usually cold, windy and course conditions are not easy – so be prepared. All golfers end up with difficult playing conditions but that will not be an excuse for poor performance. Golf clubs can be left in the locker room in a locker if they fit or they can be brought down to my classroom for storage the morning of your tryout. It also will help if YOU or YOUR PARENTS can pick you up after school and drive you to the course for tryouts because the school van has limited seating. I will give directions to any student/parent who needs them. Upper classman who drive will be permitted to drive to tryouts.
Salesianum Golf will compete and WIN at the highest level, will take great lengths to uphold the integrity and gentleman like nature of the game of golf, and will take responsibility of upholding the virtues of St. Francis De Sales athletically, academically, and personally.
As A Salesianum graduate, avid golfer, educator, and golf coach, it is my duty to foster growth and maturity to all team members, to maintain the highest level of competition, to continue the winning traditions of the golf program, and to insure that the best atmosphere exists to accomplish team and individual goals. I AM NOT A TEACHING PROFESSIONAL SO I WILL LEAVE GIVING LESSONS TO GOLF PROFESSIONALS. I will, however, do my best to improve each and every player on some level that participates in this program. I will also create inter-squad matches to increase pressure and match conditions. I will also implement a structured practice schedule to include specific target areas of improvement: long game, short game, and putting. I will also address, as needed, course management, club management, stroke or match play strategies and attitude adjustments.

DIRECTIONS TO CAVALIER COUNTRY CLUB
Thank you all for trying out this year for the team. In looking at all the numbers, I decided to go with a weighted average to help decide team members. I used the following formula to evaluate all rounds played, it is fair and sheds light on effort and potential:
(last 2 rounds played avg X 1 + 4 round avg X 2 + low 2 round avg X 3) divided by 6
it was clear after looking at the weighted averages that it was very close for 6 out of 8 players with only a 1.83 difference between the top 6 while there was a minimum of a 3.33 difference between the next two players
congratulations to the following for earning a spot on the 2008 Salesianum Golf Team:
